Borders

Tip! It is often easier to select border fabrics once

all the blocks are made. Take the blocks to your quilt shop and “audition” them with a variety of fabrics. Stand back and study the effect that different colors and different fabrics can give. You will start to see

that the fabric you choose to work with can and will affect the width of each border. For fun, ask a total stranger for an opinion. But remember, this is your quilt, and you will make the final decision. If you like what you have picked, go with that; you will be happier and will have a happy quilting experience that way!

Batting & Backing

One of the most overlooked, least understood, and least discussed products in quiltmaking is batting. This key ingredient can either enhance a quilt’s beauty or detract from and distort the quilt’s surface. No one batting is appropriate for every quilt. Quilters must consider factors such as desired surface texture, weight, warmth, loft, drape, shrinkage, fiber content, washability, bearding properties, ease of needling, and so forth. All of these factors play as important a role in a quilt’s overall appearance as do fabric choices, design piecing, and appliqué techniques. Remember, a top is not a quilt until it is quilted, and batting makes a top a quilt.

Binding

Tip! For very accurate binding, use a ruler and rotary cutter to measure from the fold. Trim to be exactly the same width the entire length of the binding.
